Cet article fait suite à l’établissement d’une version critique en anglais de la « Préface à l’édition anglaise du Séminaire XI » de Jacques Lacan. Une première traduction de ce texte en anglais a été réalisée par Alan Sheridan qui est parue en 1977 dans l’édition en langue anglaise du Séminaire, Livre XI sous le titre The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis chez Hogarth Press. Sheridan a omis de traduire une partie de la première phrase de cette préface ; il n’a pas compris ce que Lacan voulait dire par « l’esp d’un laps » qu’il a réduit à « l’espace d’un lapsus ». N’y aurait-il pas là un trait d’esprit de Lacan ? Que faire des expressions que l’on ne comprend pas ou encore quand on est face à de l’intraduisible ? Cet écrit tente d’apporter des réponses à ces questions avec l’aide de travaux contemporains.

This article follows from a critical version in English of the “Preface to the English edition of the Seminar XI” by Jacques Lacan. A first translation into English of this text was carried out by Alan Sheridan and was published by The Hogarth Press in 1977 in the English edition of the Seminar XI under the title of The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis. Sheridan neglected to translate a part of the first sentence of this preface; he failed to understand what Lacan meant by l’esp d’un laps, which he reduced to the space of a lapsus (l’espace dun lapsus). Is this not rather a witticism of Lacan? What to do with expressions that are incomprehensible or untranslatable? This article strives to bring answers to these questions with the help of contemporary works.
