Au début des années 1970, les travaux de Pierre Barbéris ont marqué un moment décisif dans les études balzaciennes. Si leur prisme marxiste a éclairé le contenu politico-économique des romans, il ne fut nullement réducteur et se combina avec une lecture sociocritique mettant en relation le pourquoi et le comment de l’écriture balzacienne. Pierre Barbéris sut également prendre une relative distance critique avec sa propre pratique, dont une grande partie féconda notre connaissance du continent Balzac et reste pertinente pour notre exploration sans cesse continuée.

Pierre Barbéris’s works in the early 1970s constitute a defining moment in the history of studies on Balzac. Far from being reductive, Barbéris’s Marxist approach not only illuminates the political and economic content of the novels, but, combined with a sociocritical method, makes possible an understanding of the relationship between the why and the how of Balzac’s écriture. If Barbéris partially distanced himself from his own approach, it is still pertinent for our endlessly continuing exploration of Balzac’s world.
