Najeh Smaoui et al., « Sexual dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia: Associated factors and relationship to quality of life », Sexologies, ID : 10670/1.20f4a2...
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess sexuality and quality of life (QOL) among a population of Tunisian patients with schizophrenia, and to study the links between sexual dysfunction (SD) and the clinical dimensions of schizophrenia, therapeutic factors, and QOL in these patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study of seventy-one patients with schizophrenia treated at the psychiatry outpatient unit at the Hedi Chaker University Hospital in Sfax, Tunisia. The questionnaire consisted of an epidemiological form and three scales: the “Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale” (PANSS), the “Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale” (ASEX), and the “36-Item Short-Form Health Survey” (SF-36). Results: The mean scores of the three PANSS syndromic domains, “positive,” “negative,” and “general psychopathology,” were 13.27, 16.68, and 28.23, respectively. QOL was impaired in 79 percent of patients. Conventional antipsychotics (CAP) were prescribed in 73 percent of cases. The prevalence of SD was 46 percent. Factors correlated with the presence of SD were: CAP treatment (p = 0.023), a high score on the “PANSS-negative” subscale (p = 0.004), a high score on the “PANSS-general psychopathology” subscale (p = 0.005), and impaired social functioning on the SF-36 (p = 0.001). Conclusions: These results underscore the significance of SD in patients with schizophrenia in terms of frequency and associated effects related to the severity of disease symptomatology, CAP usage, and QOL impact among these patients.
