Dans un roman paru au seuil du xxe siècle, intitulé Le Magicien d’Oz , l’écrivain américain Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) créa le personnage du Lion peureux, dont le portrait a été immortalisé par le film musical tourné par Victor Fleming en 1939. Nourrissant l’espoir de retrouver son courage perdu, le félin accompagnait la jeune héroïne dans sa quête du mystérieux magicien. Se pourrait-il que l’Union européenne corresponde à cet archétype du héros hésitant, contraint d’affronter les démons de son propre passé pour faire face au présent ?

The Wizard of Oz – a novel published at the dawn of the 20th century by American writer Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) – created the character of the Cowardly Lion, whose portrait was immortalised in Victor Fleming’s 1939 musical fantasy film. In hope of rediscovering his lost courage, the big cat accompanies the young heroine in her quest to find the mysterious wizard. Might the European Union be a dead ringer for this archetypal hesitant hero, forced to face the demons of its own past before being able to deal with the present ?
