In 1916, the regulations had to be revised because they did not stand the shock provoked by the difference between the imagined war and the real one. The men had to be re-mobilized and a struggle had to be given against the demoralization in front of the absolute power of the equipment. In order to preserve the combativeness and to struggle against inaction, detrimental to the discipline, the military authority developed a line praising the individual initiative of the fighter, even though in the essence this was contrary to the deep tendencies of the institution.

En 1916, les règlements doivent être revus car ils n’ont pas supporté le choc provoqué par la différence entre la guerre imaginée et la guerre vécue. Il faut remobiliser les hommes, lutter contre leur démoralisation face à la toute-puissance du matériel. Pour atteindre ce but, qui est d’entretenir coûte que coûte la combativité et lutter contre l’inaction attentatoire à la discipline, l’autorité militaire va développer un discours exaltant l’initiative individuelle du combattant, même si au fond ce recours est contraire aux tendances profondes de l’institution.
