Au Cap-Vert, la famille matricentrée s’articule au machisme formant un système qui caractérise les relations de genre. Participant de l’identité de l’homme macho, plutôt absent du foyer, la consommation de l’alcool de canne à sucre (grog), produit au Cap-Vert depuis la découverte de l’archipel, semble pouvoir devenir un attribut également féminin. Cette recherche montre qu’en inversant la construction de la spatialité genrée — le domestique à la femme et le public à l’homme — confrontée aux transformations de la société, la téméraire séduction des hommes, insufflée par le grog, ne suffit plus pour parvenir à obtenir les faveurs sexuelles des femmes. S’affirmant sur la scène publique, des femmes mettent à mal le pouvoir culturellement institué du grog dans les rapports de séduction et les relations de genre.

‪In Cape Verde, the matricentric family is linked to machismo, forming a system that characterises gender relations. As part of the identity of the macho man, who is rather absent from the home, the consumption of sugarcane alcohol (grog), which has been produced in Cape Verde since the discovery of the archipelago, seems to become an equally feminine attribute. This research shows that by reversing the construction of gendered spatiality—household to woman and the public to man—confronted with the transformations of society, the reckless seduction of men, instilled by the grog, is no longer sufficient to obtain the sexual favours of women. Women are asserting themselves on the public stage and challenging the culturally established power of the grog in seduction and gender relations.‪
