Towards Jewish Emancipation in the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany: The Case of Pitigliano through the Emblematic Figure of David Consiglio

The article explores some of the socio-political effects of the reformist age on the Jewish condition from the standpoint of the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany, with special emphasis on the times of Grand-Duke Peter Leopold of Hapsburg-Lorraine (1765-1790). While comparing Tuscan enlightened municipal regulations, the paper inspects specific local problems concerning Jewish eligibility to public offices. The relevant experience of one member of the Pitigliano community - David Consiglio - stands out as emblematic of the Jewish situation in the late eighteenth century.

L'article explore certains effets de l'âge des reformes éclairées sur la condition juive dans le Grand-Duché de Toscane, au cours du gouvernement de Pierre Léopold d'Habsbourg Lorraine notamment (1765-1790). L'étude propose une comparaison des règlements municipaux toscans dans les villes avec une présence juive (Florence, Livourne, Pise, Sienne, Pitigliano, Monte San Savino) et enquête sur des problèmes spécifiques à l'échelle locale concernant l'éligibilité des juifs dans la nouvelle structure administrative. Une étude de cas est enfin présentée: l'expérience de David Consiglio, boucher rituel de la communauté juive de Pitigliano, nommé conseiller dans le gouvernement communal.
