L’épisode biblique de Babel – la tour construite par les premiers hommes et détruite par Dieu qui les disperse en rendant la communication difficile par la séparation des langues – est souvent regardé comme l’histoire d’une punition. Pourtant la lecture commune, laïque et philosophique, que nous proposons, montre un texte beaucoup plus ouvert. Au lieu d’insister sur la destruction d’un projet humain, celui de la tour, on s’interroge sur la signification de ce qu’il y a avant cette tour, et sur ce qui se passe après. Avant, on a un peuple en mouvement ; après on a de nouveau ce peuple en mouvement, mais doté de la richesse, et non de la malédiction, des langues diverses. Nous proposons donc de lire Babel comme un éloge de la pluralité pensée à partir des langues, comme essence de l’humanité retrouvée, et non comme la violence d’un dieu jaloux.

In the Bible, the story of Babel—the tower built by the first humans and destroyed by God, who divided populations by hampering communication through the separation of languages—has long been regarded as a tale of punishment. However, the reading that we propose, both secular and philosophical, presents it as a far more open text. Rather than focusing on the destruction of a human project, that of building the tower, we consider the meaning of what existed before this tower, and what happened afterward. Before, there was a nomadic, travelling people; afterward, there remains a nomadic people, but now with the gift—not the curse—of multiple languages. We thus propose a reading of the story of Babel and its theme of languages as a celebration of the plurality at the core of a restored humanity, and not as the violent act of a jealous god.
