‪During the 1980s, Portuguese medieval historiography underwent a period of renewal in the field of urban history, but port towns, the typology of their infrastructures and the impact of these on spatial organisation were not specific subjects of study. This situation has begun to change in recent years, with new realities gradually emerging. Using the example of the Algarve, the third largest maritime center in the kingdom, I will attempt to gain a better understanding of the profile of port towns in medieval Portugal. After presenting the region (geographical characteristics, formation and evolution of the urban network, main socio-economic aspects), I will characterise the port functions of the Algarve’s towns, paying particular attention to the terminology used in royal and municipal documentation and to the buildings associated with port activities. I will then analyse the way in which the urban centres relate to the nearby port areas, but also, at times, to those that are distant from them and dissociated from them.‪

Au cours de la décennie 1980, l’historiographie médiévale portugaise a connu une période de renouveau dans le domaine de l’histoire urbaine. Mais les villes portuaires, la typologie de leurs infrastructures et l’impact de celles-ci sur leur organisation spatiale n’ont pas constitué des sujets d’études spécifiques. La situation a commencé à changer depuis quelques années, faisant apparaître peu à peu des réalités nouvelles. À partir de l’exemple de l’Algarve, troisième ensemble maritime du royaume, nous tâcherons d’accéder à une meilleure compréhension du profil des centres portuaires du Portugal médiéval. Après avoir présenté la région (caractéristiques géographiques, formation et évolution du semis urbain, principaux aspects socio-économiques), nous aborderons les fonctions portuaires des villes de l’Algarve en portant une attention particulière à la terminologie employée dans la documentation royale et municipale, ainsi qu’aux bâtiments liés aux activités du port. Après quoi, nous analyserons la manière dont les noyaux urbains s’articulent avec les espaces portuaires proches mais aussi, parfois, éloignés et dissociés d’eux.
