Anne-Claire Faucquez, « Esclavage et tourisme mémoriel à New York : expérience d’apprentissage ou quête identitaire ? », Revue française d’études américaines, ID : 10670/1.2a7iif
The purpose of this article is to question the promotion of African American history and the memory of slavery in the United States, which have been enthusiastically embraced by the tourism industry. While recent scholarship has focused on Southern plantations, few studies have highlighted the extent of the phenomenon in major Northern cities, such as New York. By reviewing the various forms these new memorial sites can take, this article will first try to understand what visitors are looking for (historical knowledge, recreational experience, remembrance) before questioning the dangers posed by the commodification of this memory.
