How to understand the relationship between politics, environment, and territory on the Nicaraguan Mosquito Coast? This territory symbolizes the paradoxical situation of Amerindian peoples at the beginning of the twenty-first century. On the one hand, we can see a broad movement for the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples, mainly through Convention 169—adopted in 1989 by the International Labour Organization—, which enshrines the land rights of native peoples. On the other hand, advances in agriculture and mining are encroaching on hitherto isolated regions. In all Latin American countries, there has been a proliferation of land and environmental conflicts, phenomena that are linked to an unprecedented level of corruption. The current situation of the Mosquito Coast and its inhabitants best symbolizes the complex fate of Indian populations at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
