Michel Serres (1930–2019) died on June 1 at the age of 88. He was an unusual philosopher who cheerfully clambered over the walls that the Academy so likes to build. Moving between the hard sciences and human sciences, he invented a “science of bridges” that brought together scientific and literary culture, by opening up the possibility of new approaches.
