The human beatbox is the art of reproducing all types of sounds with the mouth while 'adapting' them for better control. To understand how these 'voice virtuosos' juggle with so many different sounds--instrumental, rhythmic, and vocal--at the same time, we have performed a descriptive analysis of three beatboxers by observing their vocal tract behaviour by fiberscopic imaging using an OCM (Open, Close, Movement) visual scale. From an anatomical-dynamic point of view, beatboxers mobilize all the structures of their laryngopharynx separately. With this first physiological study of the human beatbox, we could observe a well-developed laryngopharyngeal system with extreme articulatory configurations to perform their art.

Le Human Beatbox est l'art de reproduire tous types de sons avec la bouche tout en les adaptant pour un meilleur contrôle. Pour comprendre comment ces "virtuoses de la voix" jonglent avec tant de sons différents - instrumentaux, rythmiques et vocaux - en même temps, nous avons effectué une analyse descriptive de trois beatboxeurs en observant le comportement de leur conduit vocal avec une image fibroscopique et en utilisant une échelle OCM (Open: ouverture, Close: fermeture, Movement: mouvement). D'un point de vue anatomo-dynamique, les beatboxeurs mobilisent toutes les structures de leur laryngopharynx séparément. Avec cette première étude physiologique du Human Beatbox, nous pouvons observer un système laryngopharyngé très développé avec des configurations articulatoires extrêmes pour produire leur art.
