Abigail Caro et al., « What do primary school pre-service teachers know or anticipate about mathematically relevant uses of language in school mathematics? », HAL-SHS : sciences de l'éducation, ID : 10670/1.2i3lu3
In this article, we present an exploratory study towards the configuration of mathematically relevant uses of language for work in contexts of mathematics education pre-service training. By means of deductive methods of analysis applied to responses from a questionnaire, we first examine evidences of what primary school student teachers know or anticipate about the function of language in school mathematics teaching and learning. We then add inductive methods of discourse analysis applied to data from the questionnaire responses amplified through selective interviews in order to explore what the student teachers know or anticipate when the teaching content is the relationship between area and volume. Results point to how some participants identify mathematically relevant uses of lexicon and grammar, while they keep a limited or absent view on other didactic potentialities of language such as its function in the production of explanations of concepts and of relationships between concepts.
