The Bergier Commission did not investigate the number of Jews who were turned away from Switzerland, and the incorrect number of 24,000 remains etched in the collective memory. The vast majority of people who were refused entry came from France. A study of the origins of Jews who arrived from Drancy and were then deported shows that no more than 2,500 of them were turned away from Switzerland. Given the small number of Jews who were refused entry at the borders between Switzerland and the Third Reich and Italy, the total number of people who were turned away from Switzerland cannot be more than 3,500.
