L’Individu en société tend à se rapprocher de son environnement social ; il tend à la conformité. D’où l’importance des informations qu’il peut avoir sur l’opinion des autres, sur cette opinion publique qui menacerait d’isolement l’individu récalcitrant. S’il se sent isolé il aura tendance à se taire. Ce concept de spirale du silence sera ainsi un élément de contribution à une réflexion sur l’influence des mass-médias.

The Spiral of silenceIndividuals need to conform to their social environment. It is thus very important for them to check the opinion of others, knowing than an individual whose views rebel against public opinion would he threatened. Individuals who feel isolated, thus tend to keep their opinions to themselves. This process is amplified by the role of media as our main access to the opinion of others, and leads to a « spiral of silence », a concept which proves essential to our understanding of media influence.
