Cet article revient sur le parcours de Léon Rosenthal, intellectuel et historien de l’art, figure des majoritaires de guerre au sein de la SFIO, dans le contexte de la sortie de guerre. Alors que ce contexte est marqué par une très forte politisation, Léon Rosenthal semble peu à peu se déprendre du politique, quittant la SFIO dès novembre 1918 pour ensuite participer à la fondation de la France libre et du Parti socialiste français, avant de s’éloigner toujours davantage, en privilégiant ses activités d’historien de l’art. Il s’agit donc d’expliquer cette distance progressive prise avec la politique, distance qui met en jeu son parcours ultérieur de socialiste d’Union sacrée, et la manière dont l’après-guerre remet en cause ce parcours.

This article seeks to explore the life of Léon Rosenthal, an intellectual and art historian who was one of the wartime majorities within the SFIO, in the context of the post-war period. While this context was marked by a very high degree of politicisation, Léon Rosenthal gradually seemed to withdraw from politics, leaving the SFIO in November 1918 and then taking part in the foundation of “France Libre” and the “Parti socialiste français”, before moving further away, giving priority to his activities as an art historian. The aim is therefore to explain this gradual distance from politics, a distance that brings into play his later career as a “Union Sacrée” socialist, and the way in which the post-war period calls this career into question.
