Résumé En

The purpose of this paper is to show that new French as a Foreign Language (FFL) teachers' representations, beliefs and knowledge (Cambra-Guiné, 2003) about conjugation and its teaching/learning, may explain what perpetuates the maintenance of the didactic tradition in teachi ng practices and restricts the implementation of new expertise and transmission practices. In order to pursue this inquiry, we approached both students pursuing their Master in teaching French as a Foreign Language and recently graduated teachers with a written questionnaire as well as semi-structured interviews. The information collected exposes the emergence of representations and thereby a legitimisation of the teaching practice, revealing the strong presence of the didactic tradition and a real need for training in teaching conjugation.
