Erasmus students’ experiences under the COVID-19 VUCA situation

Le programme d’échange d’étudiants Erasmus+ est l’un des programmes phares de l’Union européenne et vise à développer l’alphabétisation des apprenants et à lutter contre les discriminations. Suite à l’éclatement de la pandémie de COVID-19 en 2020, les mobilités étudiantes ont été fortement perturbées dans le monde entier et en particulier en Europe. Cette pandémie sans précédent a plongé toute la communauté universitaire dans une situation volatile, incertaine, complexe et ambiguë (VUCA en Anglais). Les mobilités étudiantes ont tout particulièrement subi cette rupture et ses impacts.Dans ce contexte, les auteurs de cet article ont conduit une étude comparative des expériences de mobilité d’étudiants au cours d’un semestre normal (2019) et au cours d’un semestre VUCA en pleine pandémie (2020). Les auteurs ont eu recours à la méthode d’analyse thématique pour interpréter les données collectées auprès de deux cohortes d’étudiants ayant terminé leur mobilité respectivement en 2019 et 2020. Sur la base des résultats obtenus (5 thèmes saillants), les auteurs ont cherché à analyser l’impact des quatre éléments du modèle VUCA sur les mobilités étudiantes et les expériences d’apprentissage durant la pandémie, en comparaison avec les mobilités ayant eu lieu au cours d’un semestre non perturbé par la crise sanitaire. L’article s’appuie finalement sur les stratégies et pratiques observées au sein d’une université autrichienne pour analyser les modalités d’accompagnement des étudiants en mobilité pendant la pandémie, afin d’en tirer des enseignements permettant de limiter à l’avenir les impacts négatifs de situations VUCA dans d’autres universités.

Student exchange, such as Erasmus+, is one of the flagship programmes promoted by the EU institutions of higher education, with the aim of developing learner literacy and combatting prejudice and discrimination. In the wake of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the traditional exchange programme of one or two semesters was disrupted all over the world, and in particular in Europe. This unprecedented pandemic plunged the entire academic community into a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (hereinafter “VUCA”) situation, in which exchange students faced the brunt of this rupture and its impacts. Against this backdrop, the authors of this paper conducted a comparative study regarding of the experiences of exchange students studying during a normal semester (2019) and during a pandemic-stricken VUCA semester (2020). The authors then adopted the thematic analysis method to interpret the feedback received from two cohorts of exchange students, who had finished their exchange programmes at an Austrian university in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Based on the findings (i.e. the five salient themes), the authors investigated the impact of the four VUCA elements on the exchange students’ mobility and learning experience during the pandemic crisis, compared with that of exchange students during a regular, non-disrupted semester. In reference to the salient themes, the authors drew upon the strategies and practices employed by that Austrian university during the VUCA situation to discuss how exchange students were supported during this difficult period. These shared lessons may offer insights to other universities to counter possible mishaps in prospective VUCA situations.
