« L’Ancien Régime des graffitis » : Contestations graphiques et ordre mural à l’époque moderne

Cet article ouvre sur un double chantier méthodologique et historiographique : retrouver la trace des graffitis de l’époque moderne passe notamment par une histoire visuelle de la ville. De plus, l’association contemporaine entre graffitis et vandalisme prend sens aux 17e-18e siècles. Ces dessins et inscriptions sont alors au cœur d’une synthèse liant condamnation morale des mœurs citadines et préservation de certains espaces touristiques. Enfin, si les graffitis ont souvent été placés au second plan de l’histoire des mobilisations politiques par rapport aux imprimés ou aux chansons, ils constituent cependant une forme d’expression et un outil de contestation dont la perception policière évolue en France après 1789, passant du crime de lèse-majesté au délit d’opinion.

This article adopts a methodological and historiographical approach in an attempt to understand modern graffiti via a visual history of the city. It should be noted that the contemporary relationship between graffiti and vandalism emerged during the 17th-18th centuries. At the time, drawings and writings on walls were targeted as part of a larger campaign against loose city morals, combined with a need to preserve certain sites of tourism. The article shows that although graffiti have often been relegated to the second tier in the history of political engagement, compared to printed works or songs, they nevertheless embody a means of voicing opinions and contesting the government. The police perception of graffiti evolved in France after 1789, shifting from high treason to a crime of opinion.
