The reconfiguration of international relations in the wake of the geopolitical upheavals of the later twentieth and early 21st centuries, from the so-called “end of history” to “the end of globalisation”, has stimulated theoretical innovation in diplomatic paradigms, with attention shifting from the State to public, cultural, unofficial and non-state forms of diplomacy and the exercise of ‘soft’ and ‘smart power’ influence. In parallel to the rethinking of diplomatic practice in contemporary global politics, the field of diplomatic history has extended its notional scope beyond foreign policy-making and external relations to reconsider transnational interrelations among colonial and postcolonial societies. This conference looks at how changing conceptions of diplomacy are casting new light on the past as well as the present relations of English-speaking communities with the wider world.

La reconfiguration des relations internationales dans le sillage des bouleversements géopolitiques de la fin du XXe siècle et du début du XXIe siècle, de la soi-disant "fin de l'histoire" à la "fin de la mondialisation", a stimulé l'innovation théorique dans les paradigmes diplomatiques, l'attention se déplaçant de l'État vers les formes publiques, culturelles, non officielles et non étatiques de la diplomatie et l'exercice de l'influence du "soft" et du "smart power". Parallèlement à la réévaluation des pratiques diplomatiques dans le cadre politique du monde contemporain, l'histoire diplomatique a élargi son filet conceptuel au-delà de l'élaboration de la politique étrangère et des relations extérieures pour reconsidérer les interrelations transnationales entre les sociétés coloniales et postcoloniales. Cette conférence propose d’examiner comment l'évolution des conceptions de la diplomatie jette un nouvel éclairage sur les relations passées et présentes des communautés anglophones avec le reste du monde.
