Marion Drut, « A case in the field of mobility and transport: the Autolib’ car-sharing platform », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10670/1.301278...
Vehicle sharing exists at the intersection between private cars andpublic transport. Such initiatives have multiplied over the last decadewith growing citizen participation (Firnkorn and Shaheen 2016;Drut 2018; 6t-bureau de recherche 2019). Degrowth calls for morecollective property and sharing (Jarvis 2019). Vehicle sharing offersthe potential of wider processes of social-ecological transformation, propelled by two drivers of change. First, sharing vehicles meansfewer vehicles will be needed in the economy to meet the samelevel of needs. The second lever is the demotorisation that it causes.Estimates of several case studies throughout Europe and Canadahighlight a decrease in the distance travelled by drivers enrolled ina car-sharing system from 11 to 50% (Sioui et al. 2013, Meijkamp2000). This chapter analyses to what extent the experience of theAutolib’ platform, a one-way station-based car-sharing system38 inParis, can be a potential strategy towards degrowth. As such, the casestudy is necessarily limited to a Western context.
