The present study analyzes the press of the Spanish city of Gijón during the Spanish Civil War period, between July 1936 and April 1939. The outbreak of the conflict triggered the immediate confiscation of the three major broadsheets of the town and started a process of emergence of new newspapers, first republicans –and after the fall of the city to the rebels in October 1937– then Francoists. All these publications shared a new principal function, sustaining morale on the front and the rear. This decisively determined its contents and configured a press constituted by the war and for the war
