Résumé 0

The Syrian army has not yet taken part in a generalized rebellion, since it remains well organized by homogenous, trained, and faithful units based on essentially Alawi recruitment—religious heterogeneity being an element specific to the Syrian case. However, a not insignificant section of the armed forces seems to have taken up the cause of the popular dissatisfaction, as demonstrated by acts of desertion and mutiny. In this volatile context, the relations between the professional and conscript army, the secret services, and the militias will be analyzed through political choices, party convictions, segregation along community lines, and economic interests.
