L’embellissement du chœur de l’abbatiale d’Anchin au xviiie siècle et quelques nouvelles attributions au peintre Jérôme Preudhomme

Les travaux d’embellissement de l’abbatiale d’Anchin débutèrent en 1724 et furent achevés durant la décennie 1770. Les archives permettent de retracer les phases successives de cette transformation et révèlent les mécanismes d’une importante commande artistique dans le nord de la France, d’abord à Douai, puis à Lille et à Paris. Sous l’abbatiat du cardinal de Polignac, on procéda au pavement de l’église, au réaménagement du chœur liturgique avec de nouvelles stalles et un nouvel autel. Le pourtour du chœur fut orné d’une suite de tableaux peints par Dominique Joseph Van Oost. Bernard Joseph Wamps peignit le tableau d’autel. Le chantier fut achevé sous l’abbatiat du cardinal-duc d’York. On acheta alors des peintures religieuses pour le chœur, notamment à un certain « Prudhomme » que l’on se propose d’identifier avec le peintre Jérôme Preudhomme (ca. 1770-1800).

Archive studies allow us to reconstruct the successive phases of this transformation and reveal the proceedings of an important artistic command in the north of France, first in Douai, then in Lille and finally in Paris. Under the abbacy of the cardinal de Polignac, the works included the pavement of the church, the refitting of the liturgical choir with new stalls, and a new altar. The circumference of the choir was decorated with a group of paintings by Dominique Joseph Van Oost ; Bernard Joseph Wamps painted the altarpiece. Works came to an end under the abbacy of the cardinal-duke of York. After that, religious paintings were purchased for the choir from a certain « Prudhomme », whom we propose to identify with the painter Jérôme Preudhomme ( fl. 1770-1800).
