La « rencontre », qui désigne chez les compilateurs et les conteurs du XVIe siècle le bon mot, apparaît comme une des traductions possibles, chez Amyot notamment, d’«  apophtegma ». Ceci pourrait correspondre à un renforcement de la valeur de « trouvaille occasionnelle », dans la parole orale mais aussi écrite, contenue en germe dans le terme grec. Le chapitre « Du parler prompt ou tardif » des Essais de Montaigne paraît aller dans ce sens d’une mise en évidence de la contingence linguistique et donc mentale. L’article « rencontre » du Dictionnaire de Nicot, quelques années plus tard, pourrait bien confirmer cette forte solidarité, désormais, entre « rencontre » verbale et hasard.

Apophthegm and “Rencontre”“ Rencontre”, the word which serves to designate a witticism in 16th century compilations or story collections, is one of the possible translations for “ apophtegma”, in Amyot in particular. This could be a way to reinforce the sense of “occasional discovery” in oral but also in written speech, a meaning latent in the Greek term. The chapter entitled “Du parler prompt ou tardif” (On Speaking Promptly or Tardily) in Montaigne’s Essays also seems to wish to bring to light this contingency characteristic of language and therefore of thought. And the entry for “Rencontre”, in Nicot’s Dictionary, a few years later, might well confirm that a strong link between the notion of verbal discovery, or “rencontre”, and chance meeting, has by then been established.
