Résumé 0

Given that honor was a value pertaining to a caste or aristocracy, some have concluded that it is now obsolete, and has been replaced by the notion of dignity. This is debatable, however : it may be that this distinctive quality which in times past was the preserve of the elite has been transposed into a moral quality embodying the values of self-determination typical of the modern subject. One can no longer “be dishonored” by another’s actions, but one can “dishonor oneself” with undignified behavior. The loss of a sense of honor seems above all to be linked to the dwindling of symbolic identities, a contemporary phenomenon.
