Human nature and the enhancement of human beings in the light of the transhumanist programmeThere are three main approaches about the question of Human Nature. Essentialists consider that there exists a permanent Human Nature, shared by every human being. Existentialists consider that there is no such thing as human nature, but inescapable modes of being in the world. A moderate approach would consider that Human Nature can be modified within the limits of anthropological invariants. Transhumanists are conservative in that they think that there is a Human Nature; but they are radical in that they believe that it can (and must) be transcended by bio-technnologies and computer technologies. This project is evaluated as a caricature of suitable human enhancement.

On distingue classiquement trois positions relatives à la question de la nature humaine. Selon l’approche essentialiste, il existe une nature humaine invariable, la même pour tous ; selon l’approche existentialiste, il n’existe pas de nature humaine, mais des invariants existentiaux ; selon une approche médiane, il n’existe de nature humaine qu’un un sens faible et il vaudrait mieux parler d’invariants anthropologiques. On s’intéresse ici aux spéculations des transhumanistes qui pensent qu’il existe bien une nature humaine, mais en font un stade particulier de l’évolution biologique, destiné à être dépassé au moyen des technologies de l’hyper-modernité. On montre que ce projet radicalise et caricature les possibilités effectives d’amélioration de l’être humain.
