Edward Blumenthal et al., « El exilio y el impacto del desexilio en la regeneración institucional de la Argentina, 1829–1861 », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10.1017/lar.2024.45
The process of return from exile, begun after the fall from power of Juan Manuel de Rosas in the Argentine Confederation, led to a complex web of professional reinsertion. This article examines the reincorporation of political exiles in positions associated with the formation of Argentine political institutions. We use a database of 891 cases to follow their socio-professional paths before, during, and after emigration. In the main sites of asylum in Bolivia, Chile, and Uruguay, the émigrés occupied positions associated with institution building: public office, the army, and liberal professions such as the law and journalism. We posit that exile was a foundational experience that allowed for the acquisition of governmental knowledge necessary to develop Argentine political institutions in the second half of the nineteenth century. Our study is an example of how transnational phenomena played a decisive role in the formation of contemporary nation-states.
