Résumé 0

Jan Patočka does not present a general theory of war; nevertheless, in reflecting on the First World War, he seeks to develop an approach to battle itself in its ontological dimension. A form of understanding thus opens up, which is no longer guided by the interests of daily life. It is not a matter of celebrating warlike virtues but of recognizing man in all his finitude, thus assuming his responsibility in the face of history. Therefore, while war exposes man to technical strength and to its destructive power, the Czech philosopher shows that a form of meaning community can emerge across enemy lines at the heart of the experience at the front.
