Marie Bourget et al., « Relational and marital impacts experienced by the spouses of pathological gamblers: Comparison of gamblers’ and spouses’ perceptions », Psychotropes, ID : 10670/1.3a9eea...
A gambling disorder has a serious impact not only on the life of the person suffering from the disorder but also on that of his/her significant other, and particularly on the marital relationship. Due to their complex nature, the impacts experienced by spouses have most often been explored through clinical observations that either take into account only the pathological gambler’s (PG) point of view or only the spouse’s. However, studies attempting to draw parallels between the perceptions of PGs and those of their spouses often show significant differences between the perceptions of the two members of the couple. The goal of this study was to document the divergences and convergences of perceptions between PGs and their spouses regarding the relational/marital impacts suffered by the latter as a result of pathological gambling. Interviews of PGs (n = 22) and their spouses (n = 22) were analyzed. The results revealed many discrepancies between the perceptions of the two groups, mainly concerning the impacts identified, the importance given to them, and the way these impacts are described. The limits of the study and new avenues of research are also discussed.
