In 1991, feminist critics Susie Tharu and K. Lalita published a masterful anthology: Women Writing in India, which aims at revealing Indian women’s literary voices, and questions both the genre itself (literary history or anthology?), and the definition of “Indian Literature” and “Women’s writing”. In the light of these volumes, this article aims to underline the delicate issues such militant literary history encounters, including the transnational agenda of Western feminism, in order to show the way it develops a subaltern ethos which bears witness to the diversity of the forms of oppression affecting the subaltern subject, whether it is woman, Indian, literary, postcolonial and/or vernacular.

Les critiques féministes Susie Tharu et K. Lalita publient en 1991 une anthologie magistrale : Women Writing in India, qui vise à révéler les voix littéraires féminines de l’Inde, interroge les fondements même du genre (histoire littéraire ou anthologie ?), comme il interroge ceux de littérature indienne et d’écriture féminine. Au regard de cette anthologie, cet article a pour ambition de souligner les épineuses questions que rencontre une histoire littéraire militante, dont ici celle des visées transnationales du féminisme occidental, pour montrer comment s’élabore un ethos subalterne qui témoigne de la diversité des formes d’oppression du sujet, qu’il soit femme, indien, littéraire, postcolonial et/ou vernaculaire.
