Résumé 0

In his Marc Bloch lecture, Claude Lefort considers the fragility and fruitfulness of democratic society in the light of Western history and the current events of the 2000s. Democratic fecundity is constituted by the acceptance of social division and the creation of a public space: Claude Lefort takes up here themes that are dear to him through a reflection on the historical process of urbanisation. The fragility of democracy, for its part, is considered in the context of the crisis in France’s suburbs, where the corruption of democratic mores and social inequalities are indicative of damage to the social fabric.
