L’instruction occupe une place centrale dans la pensée des physiocrates, qui la considèrent une condition essentielle du maintien de l’ordre social et du ressort économique du pays et, par cela, du bonheur des hommes. Leur doctrine pédagogique, qui se fonde sur la diffusion des connaissances utiles et d’un savoir pratique, se rapproche des idées énoncées, au début du XIXe siècle, au sein de la Société d’encouragement pour l’industrie nationale (SEIN), notamment au sujet de l’instruction des classes laborieuses. Imprégnées d’un même souci d’utilité pratique et d’une même perspective philanthropique, les idées pédagogiques des physiocrates et celles des membres de la SEIN se situent à l’origine du « paternalisme industriel » qui sera pratiqué en France au long du XIXe siècle.
