Résumé
Strict and almost immutable rules imposed by others are a form of stereotypical norms. Whilst we are spontaneously inclined to imitate others, we will argue that a need for belonging acts as a strong incentive for the individual to follow norms. Nevertheless, in addition to the need to belong, we will discuss the use of norms as a means to change our attitudes or behaviors, whether they be emancipatory or alienating.
