The presence of yellow tuff inside the city of Pompeii has always been the subject of debate among academics and it is not certain of its actual use. The research’s objectives range on several fronts, from the identification of the economic and architectural reasons, that determined the yellow tuff use, up to the definition of the range and the quantification of the use of this specific material. Then the particular mineral-petrographic characteristics of the yellow tuff push the study to a deeper level, of a less archaeological character but more linked to the conservation of the structures made with this building material. The use’s evolution of the yellow tuff is thus contextualized within the great historical, social and political events that have as scenery the Gulf of Naples and the overlooking cities, in particular Pompeii. The presence of the historic port of Pozzuoli, the interventions of the Augustan age throughout Campania, the earthquake of 62/63 CE are just some of the moments of "history" told by the ancient authors. These historical facts intersect in an inseparable way with the small economic and commercial events linked to a single constructive material, in this case the yellow tuff.
