Which scriptural bias can stress the difference between fiction and non-fiction, and how can translation, as a journey between languages and cultures, help us to understand this quasi-ontological issue?To explore this question, we propose to study the functions of French peregrinisms, postulating its demarcative potential between fiction and non-fiction, as an idiosyncratic marker, in two books, one American and one British. Our study focuses on the surge of the foreign language within the original text itself, the concept of translation being taken here in a broad, almost etymological sense. It will nontheless be shown that both writers are led to perform more or less salient forms of cross-linguistic self-translation within their own writing, as mentioned in the title of our paper.

Quel biais scriptural marquedonc la différence entre fiction et non-fiction et comment la traduction, voyage entre langues et cultures, peut-elle nous aider à appréhender cette interrogation quasi ontologique ?On propose, pour explorer cette question, d’étudier les fonctions du pérégrinisme français en lui postulant un potentiel démarcatif entre fictif et non-fictif, en tant que marqueur idiosyncrasique, dans deux ouvrages, américain et britannique. Il ne s’agit pas ici de traiter des traductions de ces ouvrages en édition française, dont on se limite à signaler brièvement les principales orientations. Notre étude se concentre sur la survenue de la langue étrangère au sein même du texte original et on entend le concept de traduction au sens large, quasi étymologique, même si l’on verra que chaque écrivain.e est amené.e à opérer des formes d’autotraduction interlinguistique plus ou moins saillantes au sein même de son écrit, comme l’indique notre titre.
