Ce texte propose un abord du sommeil, dans une perspective psychanalytique, en tant qu’il constitue une enveloppe et un habitat pour le rêve. Nous situons ici cet enveloppement comme relevant de l’Imaginaire au sens très particulier que Lacan lui donne. Nous visons à esquisser la structure formelle du sommeil et de ce qui l’habite, le rêve. Nous spécifions alors ce qui fait son caractère paradoxal : offrir d’une part les conditions d’une fermeture au monde permettant au sujet de s’abriter de la réalité, tout en étant d’autre part la condition d’advenue du rêve qui ouvre sur un réel impensable pour ce même sujet.

This paper proposes an approach to sleep, from a psychoanalytic perspective, as an envelope and a habitat of dreams. We consider this envelopment in terms of the Imaginary, in the very specific sense that Lacan gave to it. We aim to sketch the formal structure of sleep and of what inhabits it, the dream. We then specify what makes it paradoxical: providing on the one hand the conditions for closure to the world, enabling the subject to shelter from reality, while being on the other hand the condition of the dream, which opens onto an unthinkable real for this same subject.
