In application of the laws voted in the years 2010, the territorial landscape of France is being turned upside down. In addition to the mergers leading to the abolition of nine regions, the communes are now obliged to join together in larger inter-communal bodies, sometimes comprising up to more than a hundred communes. These considerable administrative changes must be analysed in terms of their geographical effects without forgetting to highlight the issues at stake.

Les grands projets d’infrastructure sont à la peine : abandon de l’aéroport de Notre-Dame-des-Landes, construction dans la douleur du Grand Contournement Ouest autoroutier de Strasbourg, report du canal Seine Nord-Europe vers 2024, des lignes ferroviaires à grande vitesse après 2030 ou 2050… Quant au projet de canal à grand gabarit entre le Rhin et la Saône, il a été abandonné dès 1997. Mais le travail de deuil n’est pas terminé ; pourquoi le débat à son sujet ressurgit-il encore et toujours ?
