As the title suggests, the volume edited by David Tréfás and Jens Lucht examines the purported weaknesses of the European Union (EU) in terms of democracy, public sphere, and identity. The two authors argue that the embeddedness of the public sphere in the national polity constitutes the main reason for the EU’s “shortcomings” in terms of the three aspects mentioned above.
