Airship bombers were for German High Command an “anti-cities” weapon, their operational employment designed with the aim of causing widespread alarm among civilians. Although they caused limited losses and destructions, it was the lack of effective direct countermeasures which aroused the nervousness of the French, leading to “spy scare”. The French resorted to human and moreover signal intelligence exploiting the biggest vulnerability of Zepplins : the dependence on wireless bearings for navigational information.
