Often considered as the first phenomenon of mass media in history, the use of books and prints by Protestants has been widely studied and has generated a rich and plentiful bibliography. In contrast, the production and use of these supports by the partisans of the Counter-Reformation have not received the attention they deserve, especially in the context of the Low Countries.The twelve contributors provide new perspectives on the efficacy of the handpress book industry to support the Catholic strategy of the Spanish Low Countries and underlines the mutually beneficial relationship between proponents of the Counter-Reformation and the typographic world. In this context, this volume represents an important contribution to our understanding of the sociocultural and socioeconomic background of the Catholic Netherlands.

Souvent considéré comme le premier phénomène de média de masse de l'histoire, l'utilisation des livres et des imprimés par les protestants a été largement étudiée et a généré une bibliographie riche et abondante. En revanche, la production et l'utilisation de ces supports par les partisans de la Contre-Réforme n'ont pas reçu l'attention qu'elles méritent, surtout dans le contexte des Pays-Bas. Les douze contributeurs de ce volume offrent de nouvelles perspectives sur l'efficacité de l'industrie du livre imprimé à soutenir la stratégie catholique des Pays-Bas espagnols et soulignent la relation mutuellement bénéfique entre les partisans de la Contre-Réforme et le monde de la typographie. Dans ce contexte, ce volume représente une contribution importante à notre compréhension du contexte socioculturel et socio-économique des Pays-Bas catholiques.
