Claude Delmas examines three problematic constructions. The first involves structures such as “I like oysters but they do not like me”. The paradox does not affect the syntax of the utterance. On the other hand from a strictly semantic point of view the figure of speech is problematic, but nothing stops the hearer from understanding the real meaning. Cognition helps the hearer to make the correct interpretation. The second case involves a split introduced in the utterance (cf. S + V # O). As in the first case, cognition facilitates the interpretation. The third case deals with formal constructions such as “… rain + NP”. It is argued that in two cases we have a recategorization of the verb as a quasi-unaccusative.
