L’Inde, assurément émergente, fait toutefois face à de nombreux problèmes : son économie ralentissait dès avant la pandémie de la Covid-19 ; les tensions avec le Pakistan se sont accrues depuis le changement de statut du Cachemire en 2019 ; et l’Inde et la Chine ont connu en 2020 leur premier affrontement frontalier meurtrier depuis 1975. Tout concourt ainsi à renforcer les relations avec les États-Unis et l’espace indo-pacifique, en maintenant toutefois un objectif d’autonomie stratégique.

Though India certainly is an emerging country, many problems persist : its economy had already been slowing, even before Covid-19. Moreover, tensions with Pakistan have risen since Kashmir’s 2019 change of status, and in 2020, India and China experienced their first deadly border clash since 1975. All of this contributes to strengthening relations with both the United States and the Indo-Pacific area, even as an objective of strategic autonomy is maintained.
