"Quality Criteria in Qualitative HealthResearch (QHR): Notes for a NecessaryDebateThe importance of gaining further knowledge as to thehealth-related needs and expectations of individuals, as well asof the factors involved in the effectiveness of health care activities, particularly of the professionals proper, make it possible toanticipate a boom in Qualitative Research in fields such as PublicHealth and Health Service Research. Such an increaseshould go hand in hand with a progressive improvement in thequality of the outcomes of research, to which end tools for assessingsaid quality are required. However, the epistemologicalimplications of the qualitative focus contribute to the setting ofthe bounds of these tolls having been a source of controversy atboth the conceptual level as well as with regard to the methodsand techniques to be employed, although without hardly anyinvolvement on the part of the health sciences in our country. This article provides a brief review of the main points of referenceof said debate and, after stressing the importance of thetheoretical development and of precision in practice, as well asthe function of the guides with regard thereto, the epistemologicaladaptation, relevance, validity and reflexivity as possiblebasic criteria for the assessment of the quality of QualitativeResearch are proposed."
