Karen Gobeil et al., « Psychosocial and academic characteristics of Quebec teenagers presenting extreme weight control eating behaviors », Bulletin de psychologie, ID : 10670/1.417a8f...
This study focused on the differences between Quebec teenagers who reported extreme weight control eating behaviors (EWCEBs) and those who did not, in terms of their body mass index (BMI), self-concept, academic performance, and bullying victimization experience. An online questionnaire was completed by 835 high school students aged 14 to 18. Those reporting one or many EWCEBs had a higher BMI and a lower self-concept than those who did not report any EWCEBs. They were also more likely to have been bullied for their weight than those without EWCEBs. Girls with EWCEBs were significantly more likely than those without EWCEBs to report a lower mathematics performance. The results suggest that it is important to intervene rapidly and in a preventive manner among adolescents in order to avoid a deterioration of their social, personal, and academic functioning and a persistence of their EWCEBs.
