Sara Muller, « Root Crops at the Heart of the Redefining Territories and Identity in Vanuatu (Melanesia) », Autrepart, ID : 10670/1.42d63b...
In Vanuatu, root crops constitute a patrimony of great cultural and biological value. The constitution of this patrimony on the slow time-scale, is the result of an “ethical ” relationship between people and cultivated crops i.e a relationship filled up with meaning in which places, people and crops are part of the same reality. Today, the rise of root crops’ origin as a quality cue seems to accompany the affirmation of new centralised territories, as well as a new definition of identity. Root crops as local specialities are thus ambiguous products, half way between the deepest Melanesian values and modern concerns such as the economic promotion of origin products. As such, they may have today – beyond the agrobiodiversity issue – a role to play in the definition of the new ni-vanuatu nation as well as in the (re)construction of the territory in a genuine ni-vanuatu way.
