The reading of the stratification of the models present in the Ruysch (Lucian of Samosata and Buffon, Byron, and in particular the Manfred read in French translation) allow us to decipher the multiple keys to reading the cumbersome presence of the supernatural that caracterizes this operetta. A supernatural that seems to change status between the initial tragic chorus of the dead and Ruysch’s subsequent comic act (from transposition to derision, in the terminology proposed by Francesco Orlando), but remains crossed by a metaphorical current that represents two great unthinkables, ‘spectres’ of consciousness : on the one hand, the parricidial temptation, on the other the overlap between childhood and dead. Beyond this flow, however, the contrastive construction of the operetta, which relativizes an abysmal tragedy with comedy, appears as a strenuous exercise in romantic irony.
