Résumé 0

In two studies, we investigated the impact of stereotype activation on the social and professional integration of unemployed people. In a first study conducted on a sample of 115 unemployed people, participants demonstrated lower performance on a reading comprehension task and reported fewer intentions to search a job when the context made salient the category of unemployed people than when the context made salient the category of adults. A second study polled 34 unemployed people and showed that participants reported fewer intentions to engage in cultural activities when the context activated the stereotype of unemployed people than when the context activated the stereotype of adults. Moreover, the importance of the cultural domain was found to mediate the impact of stereotype activation on intentions to engage in cultural activities. The results are discussed in light of the research on stereotype activation (Bargh, Chen, & Burrows, 1996) and the literature on stereotype threat (Steele & Aronson, 1995).
