Twenty Years of Prospecting in the Weppes, Between Deûle and LysOver the past twenty years, the members of the Hachedewep organization have been carrying out onfoot prospecting between the Deûle and the Lys rivers. A significant number of sites have thus been identified and the collected material was handed over to the Seclin city services. After comparing these data with the findings gathered during diagnostic field operations and preventive archaeological excavations, we are eventually in a position to draw a rather thorough cartography of human occupation between the valleys of the Deûle and of the Lys. Contrary to what was hitherto assumed, sites can be found as much on the plateau as at the bottom of the valley. The study of the numerous artefacts collected during prospecting permits one to put forward a tentative dating for these sites. The vast majority of the items collected date back to the Roman period with the largest number of sites dating back to the late iind and iiird centuries, like the Bauvin trove that was subjected to a more extensive analysis. The inventory is indeed quite in keeping with what the Deûle valley sites characteristically deliver. Protohistoric occupation is confined to a few deposits, most of them found during trenchdigging operations. On the other hand, a total lack of Merovingian and Carolingian occupation is to be noted and must probably be attributed to the great difficulty met in identifying this type of occupation. During the mediaeval and modern periods, the plateau recovers as dense a rate of occupation as during the Antique period with the development of farms and villages.

Depuis une vingtaine d’années, les membres de l’association Hachedewep mènent des prospections pédestres entre la Deûle et la Lys. Un nombre important de sites a été repéré et le matériel a été déposé au Service municipal de Seclin. Ajoutés aux résultats des opérations de diagnostic et de fouilles archéologiques préventives, nous sommes en mesure aujourd’hui de dresser une cartographie assez complète de l’occupation entre les vallées de la Deûle et de la Lys. Contrairement à ce que l’on a pu supposer, les sites se rencontrent aussi bien sur le plateau que dans le fond de la vallée. L’étude de l’important matériel récolté lors des prospections a permis de proposer une hypothèse de datation pour ces sites. Le mobilier d’époque romaine est largement majoritaire avec une prépondérance de sites datés de la fin du iie et du iiie s. à l’image du lot de Bauvin qui a fait l’objet d’un examen plus poussé. Le répertoire est d’ailleurs tout à fait caractéristique de ce que livrent les sites de la vallée de la Deûle. L’occupation protohistorique se limite à quelques gisements, la plupart découverts lors de travaux de terrassements. Par ailleurs, on note l’absence totale d’occupation mérovingienne et carolingienne sans doute imputable à la grande difficulté à repérer ce type d’occupation. À l’époque médiévale et moderne, le plateau retrouve une densité d’occupation aussi importante que durant la période antique avec le développement de fermes et de villages.
